The ELH tier is the longest-reach member of the SFP992 single-mode family, extending the same 1000BASE-ZX link out to 120 km, roughly 70% further than the LH+ variant's 70 km ceiling, by raising the receiver sensitivity to -32 dB. Its 8 dB minimum link attenuation and 37 km minimum range make it unsuitable for anything shorter, so reserve it for the longest inter-site backbone runs and drop to the LH or LH+ variant once the span falls under 70 km, since those transceivers cost less at the same 1000 Mbit/s bandwidth. Because the optical budget is tuned for very long spans, unused margin on shorter links has no benefit.
