The Siemens SCALANCE SC642-2C (6GK5642-2GS00-2AC2) is an industrial security appliance combining a stateful inspection firewall, NAT/NAPT and an IPsec/OpenVPN gateway for up to 200 tunnels with AES-256 encryption. It provides two combo ports (RJ45 10/100/1000 Mbit/s or SFP), runs on redundant 24V DC, and connects to SINEMA RC for remote access.

Selection Notes

The SC642-2C adds an IPsec/OpenVPN gateway with up to 200 tunnels and AES-256 encryption to the SC632-2C's stateful firewall and NAT/NAPT - pick it over the SC632-2C whenever a permanent encrypted tunnel to a remote site or central VPN concentrator is required, not just a SINEMA RC client link. Its two combo ports match a single-cell deployment; if the cell has more connected segments to secure individually, the SC646-2C carries the same VPN gateway on four extra RJ45 ports. X.509v3 certificate support (alongside preshared keys) lets it fit into a PKI-managed VPN rollout across multiple sites.

Applications

The SC642-2C is placed at the boundary of a production cell that needs both local firewall/NAT protection and a permanent encrypted link back to a central SCADA or engineering network, for example a remote skid or packaging line connected over a public or third-party WAN.
