The XM416-4C gives up 8 combo positions for a wider set of fixed copper ports - 16 RJ45 versus the XM408-8C's 8 - which suits a cell dominated by field devices on twisted-pair drops rather than fiber uplinks. The same up-to-24-port expansion path and KEY-PLUG-gated Layer 3 routing apply, so the choice between the two comes down to how many ports need to be fiber-ready from day one. With only 4 combo ports, reserve them for the ring uplinks or SFP-fiber backbone links and route the rest of the cell over the 16 fixed RJ45 ports.
