Choose this SM 431 variant when a single module must cover more sensor types than a standard analog input card, since it accepts voltage, current, resistance, thermocouple, and resistance-thermometer signals on the same 16 channels rather than a fixed subset. The 16-channel density also halves the module count versus 8-channel SM 431 variants in installations mixing several signal types across one rack, at the cost of losing one channel's worth of terminals per measurement type change during commissioning.
Applications
The five supported sensor types on 16 channels suit process racks that combine RTD temperature loops, thermocouple points, and standard 4-20 mA transmitters on one S7-400 slot, common in batch and utility skids.
