The 17.4 V / 40 mA output rating sizes this module for Ex ib field actuators, solenoids, relays, or indicator lamps whose intrinsically-safe entity parameters fit under that envelope; a higher-current load needs an isolating relay outside the hazardous area instead. Parallel switching of two channels is supported for load uprating when one channel's 40 mA is not enough for a single device. The SIL 3 / PLe / Category 4 rating puts the fail-safe shutdown function inside the I/O module itself, without needing an external safety relay.
