How to choose

• Managed or unmanaged: managed switches add VLANs, redundancy and diagnostics, which plant networks usually need.

• Redundancy protocol: check that ring protocols such as MRP or RSTP are supported.
• Power and mounting: 24 V DC or 230 V AC supply, DIN rail or 19-inch rack, and PoE where needed.
• Environment: temperature range and protection class for cabinet or field use.

Can I use office switches in a control panel?

They are not designed for it. Industrial switches handle wider temperature ranges, vibration and 24 V DC supply, and support industrial protocols such as PROFINET.

What is the difference between SCALANCE X and SCALANCE W?

SCALANCE X is wired Ethernet switching. SCALANCE W is industrial wireless LAN with access points and clients.
