Choose the rear-port version when the switch mounts in a cabinet where all cabling runs from behind, keeping the front panel clear for the LED diagnostics and select/set button. Layer 3 prepared means IP routing (RIPv2, OSPFv2, VRRP) stays inactive until a KEY-PLUG XR-500 module is added — the Layer-3-integrated variant of this switch is the direct choice instead if routing must work without that extra license. The 4x SFP+ uplinks carry 10 Gbit/s backbone traffic while the 12 media-module ports supply PoE up to 30 W per port and 180 W total to field devices.
