- Description
The Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 SM 1223 (6ES7223-5PH50-0XB0) is a digital I/O signal module adding 8 sink/source 24 V DC inputs and 8 relay outputs rated 2 A to an S7-1200 station. It plugs directly onto the CPU or a prior expansion module, drawing 105 mA from the 5 V DC backplane bus.

Selection Notes
The relay outputs on this module switch resistive loads to 2 A and lamp loads to 200 W AC / 30 W DC without an external interposing relay, at the cost of a slower output delay (10 ms) than a transistor-output SM 1223 variant - pick the relay variant to switch AC or mixed-voltage loads directly from the PLC, and a transistor variant where faster switching matters. Inputs are grouped in fours with 707 V DC isolation from the backplane bus, so mixed signal types across input groups stay electrically isolated from the CPU side.
Applications
Expanding digital I/O on an S7-1200 station where the CPU's onboard I/O is not enough - the relay outputs suit driving contactors, solenoids, and indicator lamps directly, while the 8 DC inputs read limit switches, push-buttons, or sensor contacts in machine control panels.
