The Siemens SCALANCE SC636-2C (6GK5636-2GS00-2AC2) is an industrial security appliance that protects discrete manufacturing and process networks with a stateful inspection firewall and NAT/NAPT address translation. It provides six ports - four RJ45 10/100/1000 Mbit/s plus two combo ports - runs on 24V DC with dual redundant inputs, and connects to SINEMA RC for remote access via OpenVPN.

The SC636-2C's four extra RJ45 ports over the SC632-2C let one appliance police several connected segments in a cell - pick it when more than two upstream/downstream links need individual firewall rules, avoiding a separate switch in front of the security appliance. Ring redundancy, HRP and MRP support let it sit inside a redundant Industrial Ethernet ring, unlike the two-port SC632-2C variant. Like the SC632-2C, it has a stateful inspection firewall and OpenVPN only as a SINEMA RC client, not a full site-to-site VPN gateway; pick the SC646-2C instead when a permanent IPsec or OpenVPN tunnel to a remote site is required on the same six-port hardware.

Applications

The SC636-2C sits at the boundary of a production cell with several connected machines or PROFINET devices, filtering and NAT-translating traffic to the plant backbone while its ring-redundancy support keeps the cell's own Ethernet ring intact if a link fails.
