The Siemens 6GK5408-8GS00-2AM2 SCALANCE XM408-8C is a managed modular Industrial Ethernet switch with 8x 10/100/1000 Mbit/s RJ45 ports and 8 combo ports switchable to 100/1000 Mbit/s SFP, for up to 24 ports once expanded. It is a PROFINET IO device with redundancy protocols, VLAN, IGMP, and Layer 3 routing available through a KEY-PLUG.

The XM408-8C ships with 8 usable ports across the fixed RJ45 and combo positions, with headroom to 24 total once plug-in modules are added, so it fits a cell that starts small but is expected to grow into a ring or star topology later without a base-unit swap. Static and dynamic IP routing (RIPv2, OSPFv2, VRRP) stays dormant until a KEY-PLUG XM-400 is installed - skip it for a flat Layer 2 cell and add it only when the line needs its own routed subnet. Pick the XM416-4C sibling instead when 16 fixed RJ45 ports matter more than combo-port SFP flexibility for the same expansion budget.
