Integrated Layer 3 routing - static and dynamic IP routing, OSPFv2/OSPFv3, VRRP - is what separates the XM408-8C from the Layer-2-only XB/XC switches, so pick it where the network design needs inter-VLAN routing or a redundant gateway without a separate router. The 8 built-in combo ports expand to 24 electrical or optical ports via plug-in modules, so the base unit fits smaller distribution cabinets that may grow later; choose the 16-port XM416-4C instead when more fixed copper ports are needed up front with fewer combo/SFP positions. At up to 360 W total PoE across the plug-in modules, it can power field devices like IP cameras or WLAN access points directly from the switch.

Applications

Suited to distribution-layer network nodes that route traffic between VLANs or plant zones, and to PROFINET system-redundancy topologies where Layer 3 failover and jumbo-frame (9216 byte) support matter.
