The 3-port integrated switch and PROFINET system redundancy (S2) support are the deciding factors over the base IM 155-6 PN ST/BA variants: S2 redundancy keeps the station on the bus if one PROFINET ring path fails, relevant on machines where an I/O dropout stops production. Multi-hot swapping lets individual I/O modules be replaced without powering down the whole station, useful on lines that can't tolerate a full station restart. The 288-byte-per-module / 1440-byte-per-station address space caps how many high-channel-count analog or safety modules can sit behind a single IM — large stations may need to split across two interface modules.
