Schneider Electric XPSMCMCO0000S1 Modicon MCM RS485 Safe Communication Expansion Module Safety PLC

The Schneider Electric XPSMCMCO0000S1 is a Modicon MCM safe communication expansion module that adds one RS485 port, via a 4-way connector, to an XPSMCM safety controller for safe inter-controller communication. It connects over the backplane expansion connector and cannot operate stand-alone, reaching Category 4 / PL e per ISO 13849-1 and SIL 3 per IEC 61508 over a maximum 50 m cable distance.

Unlike the CANopen, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP modules in the MCM range, the XPSMCMCO0000S1 carries safe RS485 communication rather than non-safe diagnostics - it reaches Category 4 / PL e per ISO 13849-1 and SIL 3 per IEC 61508 for linking safety controllers, not just reporting status. It expands an existing Modicon MCM safety controller CPU over the backplane bus and cannot run stand-alone; its 50 m maximum cable distance is shorter than the non-safe fieldbus modules, so route it accordingly within the panel or cell.

Applications

The XPSMCMCO0000S1 fits machines that chain two or more XPSMCM safety controllers together - for example a conveyor line split into zones - where each controller's safety decision still needs to reach the next one over a certified safe link rather than a monitoring-only network.
