- Description
The Siemens FM 450-1 (6ES7450-1AP01-0AE0) is a 2-channel counter function module for the SIMATIC S7-400 rack, handling incremental or pulse encoder signals up to 500 kHz on 5 V RS422 inputs and up to 200 kHz on 24 V inputs. It adds 6 parameterizable digital inputs and 4 digital outputs for gate control and threshold switching, and ships with a CD configuration package.

Selection Notes
The 5 V RS422 counter input reaches 500 kHz versus 200 kHz on the 24 V input, so wire the RS422 side when the encoder outputs differential 5 V signals and the application needs the higher pulse rate. The 32-bit (or +/-31-bit) counting range covers long-run length measurement without rollover. Six digital inputs are parameterizable for gate start, gate stop, and counter preset, so the gating logic runs in the module rather than the CPU cycle. Four digital outputs, rated 0.5 A with electronic short-circuit protection, switch directly off comparator thresholds for limit or preset alarms.
Applications
Typical uses include length measurement on cut-to-length and winding lines, position tracking on conveyors, and packaging machinery where a 500 kHz encoder signal needs hardware-level counting inside an S7-400 rack.
