The 16DO/0.5A sourcing variant fits applications that need more output points per module than the 8-output SM 1222 - two isolated groups of 8 keep a field-wiring fault on one group from affecting the other. Short-circuit protection is not built in, per the verified spec, so external fusing or a protected 24 V source is required on the output side, unlike relay-output SM 1222 variants that tolerate higher inrush without external fusing. A relay-output SM 1222 is the better fit instead if the application needs to switch AC loads or currents above 0.5 A per point.
